Mineral Services

Overview

Western Australia (WA) is one of the most prospective mineral regions in the world accounting for nearly half of Australia’s total mining production, about 10 per cent of global exploration and more than 60 per cent of Australia's total mineral exploration investment.

Successful mineral exploration in WA has resulted in the production of a diverse range of resources.
This includes some 50 different minerals in commercial production - far greater than in any other State or Territory in Australia.

Iron ore, gold and alumina are the main minerals produced in WA. With petroleum, they provide 80 per cent of the total value of resource production.

The Department of Mines and Petroleum:

• Helps companies explore for and secure access to mineral resources
• Minimises social, cultural and environmental impacts
• Ensures a satisfactory return to the community
