
Occupational Groups
Occupational groupings within the Department of Mines and Petroleum comprise a variety of professional, technical and administrative roles and the major ones are outlined here.
There is also a broad range of other occupations within the Department that have not been included.
For example, the Corporate Support Division employs administrative and professional staff in Human Resources, Finance, Records, Facilities and Services, Occupational Health and Information Services.

Administrative and Executive Officers
Communications and Marketing Officers
Geospatial/Spatial Information Officers
Administrative and Executive Officers
Administrative and Executive Officers are located throughout the Department. They perform organisational, clerical, secretarial and other administrative tasks in support of the Executive, management and branches generally.
Salary Level
Administrative and Executive Officers are classified from Level 1 to Level 5.
Qualifications
These positions require relevant experience, knowledge and skills in administrative support and office administration procedures including using office computing and data systems. Minimum requirement is previous on the job experience.
Communications and Marketing Officers
Communications and Marketing officers provide a range of marketing, media management and internal and external communications services to the department. These positions provide leadership and guidance across advertising, promotion, event coordination, media liaison, journalistic and editorial services, graphic design, public issues management, media training and media advice.
Salary Level
Communications and Marketing Officers are classified from Level 3 to Level 8
Qualifications
These positions require demonstrated experience in journalism, communication, marketing and/or public relations.
Corporate Support Positions
Corporate Support includes Human Resources, Finance, Records, Libraries, Facilities, Strategic Planning and Information Services. People employed in to one of the above Branches can expect to be involved in:
- Human Resources Branch - recruitment, employee relations, employee benefits, and reporting, occupational health and safety, consultancy and projects. Examples of positions in this area, HR Officer, HR Officer Payroll and Human Resources Consultants.
- Finance Branch - the development of financial policy and plans, provision of financial advice and delivery of financial and supply services to the Department. Examples of positions in this area in this area are Divisional Finance Officers, Financial Analyst and Financial Accountant.
- Records Branch - assisting all staff with record keeping responsibilities and facilitating in moving from paper based records to Electronic Document and Records Management. Examples of positions in this area are Records Officer, Record Keeping Consultant and Freedom of Information Officer
- Facilities Branch - managing and maintaining the Department’s fixed physical assets. Examples of positions in this area are Project Officers and Facility Services Officers.
- Strategic Planning Branch - facilitating planning and organisational development initiatives to enable to delivery of Departmental outcomes. Examples of positions are Strategic Planning Consultants, Organisational Development Consultant and Project Officer
- Information Services - providing assists in the provision of information technology to employees. Examples of positions are Systems Analyst, Desktop/Servicedesk Support Officer and Web Systems Officers.
- Library Services – undertakes the collection, organisation and provision of focused information products and services. Examples of positions in this area are Librarian and Reference Librarian.

Salary Levels are classified from Level 1 to Level 9 and Specified Calling Level 1 to 2
Qualifications
Qualifications are desirable but not a requirement for all Corporate Services Positions. The majority of positions in the Finance Division require a tertiary qualification in Accounting and membership (or eligibility) in the Institute of Chartered Accountants or the Australian Society of Certified Practicing.
The Specified Calling positions within Library Services require a Bachelor of Applied Science (Information & Library Studies) or approved equivalent degree.
All positions require relevant experience in field required.
Customer Service Officers
The Department employs Customer Service Officers in the Resources Safety and Mineral Titles Divisions. They provided front line customer service to internal and external customers in the issue and renewal of licences and permits.
Salary Level
Salary Levels are classified from Level 2 to Level 3
Qualifications
These positions require relevant experience, knowledge and skills in customer service and may include the use of office administration procedures including using office computing and data systems. Minimum requirement is previous ‘on the job’ experience.
Engineers
The Department employs several different types of engineers including but not limited to mining, petroleum, mechanical, pipeline, reservoir, electrical and structural engineers. Engineers are employed predominately in the Department’s Resources Safety and Petroleum Divisions.
Engineers are primarily involved in planning and directing the engineering aspects of locating and extracting minerals, petroleum and natural gas from the Earth. They are also involved in ensuring safety in mining, dangerous goods and onshore petroleum industries through enforcement and specialist advice.

Qualifications
Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science or approved equivalent degree.
Environmental Assessors
Environmental Assessors within the Mineral, Native Vegetation and Petroleum Branches of the Environment Division are responsible for administering the environmental aspects of State and Commonwealth mineral and petroleum legislation. This is achieved by conducting environmental assessments, audits and monitoring services as well as initiating the Department’s enforcement policy as required.
Environmental Assessors also develop, implement and advise on policies and plans for managing and protecting the environment, flora, fauna and other natural resources.
Salary Level
Environmental Assessors are classified from Specified Calling Level 1 to Level 5.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science) or approved equivalent degree is required.
Geologists and Geoscientists
Geologists within the Geological Survey Division study the composition, structure and other physical attributes of the Earth. They also provide technical and economic advice related to mineral reserves and resources, mineral developments and mining operations in the State.
Geoscientists investigate, collate and analyse geoscience data in order to generate high-quality maps, reports and datasets on the geology, geophysics, geochemistry, mineral and petroleum resources of Western Australia.
Salary Level
Geologists and Geoscientist are classified from Specified Calling Level 1 to 5.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science (Geoscience) or approved equivalent degree.
Geospatial/Spatial Information Officers
Geospatial Information and Spatial Information Officers are employed by various Divisions of the Department. Geospatial and Spatial Information Officers are involved in acquiring, evaluating, analysing and manipulating spatial data to support the department. They also capture and maintain spatial information on mineral deposits and land proposals into corporate systems.
Salary Level
Geospatial and Spatial Information Officers are classified from Level 3 to Level 5.
Qualifications
These positions generally require a tertiary qualification in Mapping Sciences, Spatial Science or a relevant related discipline.
Inspectors
Inspectors are employed in the Department’s Resources Safety Division.
These officers are involved in ensuring safety in mining, dangerous goods and onshore petroleum industries through enforcement and specialist advice with regard to occupational health and safety regulations, examples of positions are District Inspector of Mines, Inspector or Special Inspector Mines Machinery.
Salary Level
Inspector positions are classified from Specified Calling Level 1 to 5 and Level 5 to 7.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science or approved equivalent degree. For non specified callings positions possession of a diploma or higher qualification in a relevant engineering discipline or a trade certificate in a relevant mechanical engineering trade.
Research, Policy and Project Officers
Several branches in the Department each employ Research, Policy and Project Officers.
Research, Policy and Project Officers carry out a variety of functions including but not limited to collating, analysing and circulating information for the Department. They also prepare and assist in the development of policy plans, presentations and briefing papers. The specific role of a Research, Policy or Project Officer varies depending on which Division of the Department they are located.

Salary Levels of Research, Policy and Project Officers are classified from Level 2 to Level 7.
Qualifications
Research, Policy and Project Officers require differing qualifications depending on where they are required within the Department and their salary level.
Scientific Officers
Scientific Officers are employed predominately in the Department’s Resources Safety Division.
Scientific Officers are primarily involved in ensuring safety in mining, dangerous goods and onshore petroleum industries through enforcement and specialist advice with regard to occupational health and safety regulations, examples of positions are Dangerous Goods Officers and Occupations Health Inspector.

Scientific Officers are classified from Specified Calling Level 1 to 5.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science or approved equivalent degree.
Titles/Title Services Officers
Title and Title Service Officers are employed in the Mineral Titles and Petroleum Divisions and are involved in processing title applications, dealings and transfers; maintaining title applications and the registry; searching applications and operational activities; collecting and auditing fees as well as undertaking data entries.
Salary Level
Title Service Officers are classified from Level 2 to Level 4.
Qualifications
Experience in processing applications is required in accordance with Departmental procedures.
