Audit guidelines and templates
High impact function (HIF) audits examine the way in which certain functions with a high hazard potential are performed within an organisation.
The process looks at the function vertically, from inception to completion, down through the organisation. For example, the HIF audit for electrical tagging out systematically scrutinises this process from its roots in the policy and procedures of the organisation to the point where an operator physically uses it.

Roadshow Report: Toughness in the Workplace 2011
A major commitment under the safety reform strategy is for Resources Safety to support the development of positive safety cultures in the resources industry. To help achieve this, Resources Safety sought mining industry input into a strategic program to understand how widely accepted “tough” behaviours and communication styles affect safety in the workplace, how toughness might be redefined, and what resources and training are required to support positive cultural change.
In 2010 Dr Dean Laplonge of Factive ran roadshow workshops for Resources Safety to collect information from a variety of industry stakeholders. His report summarises and analyses the responses, and includes recommendations on how to respond to the problems that arise from the relationship between gendered behaviours and safety.
Resources Safety has considered the report’s recommendations and a strategy is being developed to address this and other issues related to safety culture. See Supporting the development of positive safety cultures for further information.
Safety Behaviour Survey of the WA Mining Industry 2002
A Safety Behaviour Survey was undertaken by the Mines Occupational Safety and Health Advisory Board (MOSHAB) in 2002 to collect information from employees regarding their views on key safety issues, including perceptions of things that might lead to risk-taking behaviour on mine sites.
Baseline Perceptions Survey of Resources Safety Stakeholders 2010
To establish a robust baseline against which to measure progress towards achieving the aims of the safety reform strategy, DMP commissioned independent research consultants Research Solutions to survey stakeholders in 2010 about their perceptions of Resources Safety’s roles, services and functions.
The survey also sought industry’s view of its own performance in achieving “a proactive, consultative safety culture” and how advanced it is in having the attributes of a resilient safety culture.
The survey was distributed in early November 2010. The research results (see below) have been reviewed by the Resources Safety and where appropriate, action plans have been developed to address concerns raised in the survey.
The industry survey will be conducted biennially to provide ongoing evaluation of safety reform progress.
