Resources Safety inspector numbers boosted

The appointment of new safety inspectors for the resources beat marks another major achievement in the State Government’s ongoing commitment towards resources safety reform.

Mines and Petroleum Minister Norman Moore said that having the right people for the job was the key to the success of the State Government’s safety reform strategy.

“The new recruits completed a comprehensive and intensive training and development program for inspectors which was part ensuring we have the right people for the job,” he said.

“Successfully completing this program is a major achievement, however, their work has just begun. We must not forget the ultimate reason for the reforms is to a make a difference to safety in the resources industry.”

The course was designed to complement and enhance existing technical expertise to better equip staff for a regulatory role, either in mining, petroleum or dangerous goods.

“The objective is for these inspectors to more effectively oversee safety regulation of the resources industry and support the necessary cultural change within industry,” Minister Moore said.

“It is important that the passion these inspectors have for safety is translated across the industry and kept at the forefront of every worker’s mind.”

Today’s official appointment ceremony was the result of a targeted recruitment campaign developed as part of the reform process. The new inspectors will service the resources safety inspectorates across the State.

Advertising for additional positions closed earlier this month and when filled, will further build the capacity of Resources Safety.
