WA explored at Geological Survey Seminar and Poster Display

Friday, 20 February 2009

Western Australia’s mineral and petroleum prospects was the topic of conversation when more than 200 geologists, researchers and explorers gathered in Fremantle recently for the Geological Survey of Western Australia’s (GSWA) Seminar and Poster Display.

Uranium mineralisation, new geothermal energy opportunities and emerging areas of mineral potential in Western Australia were key discussions at the annual event which was formally opened by Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Norman Moore.

Acting Executive Director of GSWA, Rick Rogerson, said the 2009 event proved very successful and gave industry and research organisations a closer insight into the work being undertaken by one of Western Australia’s key geological organisations.

“Highlights from the Geological Survey Division’s ongoing field mapping program, and current exploration data and software online were demonstrated to attendees,” he said.

“It was a great opportunity to view the latest results of our pre-competitive geoscience programs, new products and online services.

“Pre-competitive geoscience information plays a major role in the development of Western Australia’s resources by helping companies with their mineral and energy exploration.”

Geoscience Australia representative, Ned Stolz, presented on the State’s results of its special funding aimed at ensuring energy resource security in Australia.

An extensive poster display, including a huge map that seamlessly links the whole of Australia’s surface geology, was also showcased to guests.

The GSWA Seminar and Poster Display, which has been running since 1998, is coordinated by GSWA, a division of the Department of Mines and Petroleum.
