The 2008 Surface Emergency Response Competition.
Tuesday, 31 March 2009
The annual compilation of statistics covering safety performance in Western Australia’s minerals industry is now available.
Safety Performance in the Western Australian Mineral Industry – Accident and Injury Statistics 2007-2008 is a comprehensive guide relating to accidents on mine sites that resulted in injuries between July 2007 and June 2008.
Produced by the Department of Mines and Petroleum’s Resources Safety Division, it presents figures surrounding fatal accidents, serious injuries, lost time injuries, disabling injuries and injuries by commodities.
The department’s Director of Mines Safety, Simon Ridge, said the publication is a useful tool to guide industry's strategic interventions in reducing accident and incidents.
“The data provided to industry can assist in the development of injury prevention strategies,” he said.
“It’s an example of how Resources Safety participates in, and assists with, the development of mine safety in Western Australia.”
Simon said that according to statistics recorded by Resources Safety, a slight but continuing improvement in the State’s overall safety performance was evident over the last year.
He said that although an improvement had been recorded, Resources Safety maintains the view that no fatal accident is acceptable, and a fatal injury incidence rate of zero is achievable and sustainable.
