Varanus Island Incident
The department has established this web page to provide information and communicate the latest developments regarding the department’s role in the Varanus Island incident.
Varanus Island is a gas processing facility operated by Apache Energy Ltd, located about 115km west of Dampier in the State’s North-West.
A major gas explosion at the facility on June 3, 2008 cut Western Australia’s domestic gas supply by 30 per cent.
The Department and the National Offshore Petroleum Safety Authority (NOPSA) worked with Apache to determine the process for early and safe resumption of gas and liquids production.
