The Western Australian resources industry is renowned for being tough, but how does that perception of toughness influence safety in the industry?
This was one of the questions posed by leading researcher Dr Dean Laplonge of Factive Communications at workshops during the 2010 Mines Safety and Exploration Safety Roadshows, which looked at how workers in the minerals industry perceive the relationship between toughness and safety, and how this can be challenged.
Resources Safety is presenting two-hour workshops on toughness in mining on 7 April at the Mining Australia Expo 2011. Dr Laplonge will revisit some of the workshop exercises and summarise the findings from the roadshows. Dr Su Ho from Resources Safety will then outline the recommendations that arose from this consultation process and how Resources Safety can support the minerals industry as it moves towards resilient safety cultures being the norm.
Attendance is free but pre-registration is required – visit www.dmp.wa.gov.au/events for more details.
