Spotlight on petroleum in WA

WA Petroleum Day to focus on petroleum production and exploration in and around Western Australia.
Date: Friday, 03 August 2018

For the first time, the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety’s WA Petroleum Day will take a big picture view of the sector with the involvement of the Commonwealth regulators, National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator (NOPTA), National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) and the Federal Department of Industry, Innovation and Science (DIIS).

Held on Friday 14 September at the Hyatt Regency in Perth, the full day program will focus on national and state policy and regulatory directions, international trends and exploration strategies.

DMIRS Executive Director, Geological and Resources Strategy Division, Jeffrey Haworth said that the presence of both State and Commonwealth regulators will give the industry participants an insight into the changes that will affect their operations, whether they be onshore or offshore.

“With WA producing nearly 50 per cent of Australia’s total gas production, we want to ensure the State’s industry is aware of national and international trends and government regulations; what is similar, what differs and why,” Mr Haworth said.

“We’re very excited for this year’s panel discussion, which will explore the role of gas in WA’s future energy mix. Energy supply is diversifying with the increased popularity of renewable energy and with the rapid growth of the lithium and battery metals industries in WA, will competitive pricing keep gas in WA or will exports increase?”

“To facilitate this discussion we are very pleased to welcome industry expert Ted Surette from KPMG Australia who will I’m sure, encourage an open debate.”

Some key presentations on the WA Petroleum Day agenda include:

  • Commonwealth policy update, Lisa Schofield, General Manager Offshore Resources, DIIS
  • Review of policy and regulation in Western Australia, Karen Caple, A/Executive Director Resource and Environmental Compliance, DMIRS
  • International regulation trends, Stuart Smith, Chief Executive Officer, NOPSEMA
  • Creating an interconnected gas gathering system for Western Australia, Nigel Hearne, Managing Director, Chevron Australia

Tickets are $110 each and will include lunch, morning and afternoon tea, and a networking sundowner. The full program can be found at www.dmirs.wa.gov.au/wapetroleumday.
