That’s a wrap on GSWA Open Day 2022

Open Day delivers leading industry experts and research
Date: Thursday, 08 December 2022

The Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) held its annual Open Day on Friday 25 November at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in East Perth.

The sold out event was attended by three hundred delegates across State and Federal government, mining, land, and data industries, leading Earth Science academic institutions, and other areas. Attendees enjoyed a full day of innovative, relevant, and captivating content about the latest geological information and major activities undertaken by GSWA.

Keynote speakers Michele Spencer, Executive Director Geological Survey and Resource Strategy Division, and Nicole Roocke, CEO of Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia were followed by presentations featuring some of GSWA’s most significant research for 2022.

Topics included mineral carbonation, WA Array, the Geoscience Data Transformation Program, hydrogen, Aboriginal engagement, and GSWA’s involvement in the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development’s WaterSmart farm initiative.

The day ended with a panel discussion around the issues of land access for exploration, mining, renewable energy and conservation, and how they are able to coexist rather than compete. The panel discussed the opportunities a diversified resources sector presents, how potential land conflict could be managed with early engagement, and how operators can plan for life beyond a project, such as building capacity and providing for traditional owners and communities.

Throughout the event, delegates were able to interact with the technology that will shape the future of geoscience, including hands-on displays of seismometers, virtual-reality core-logging equipment, and the Mineral Systems Atlas.

GSWA Open Day continues to be one of Western Australia’s premier geological events. Record attendance numbers and the level of engagement from geoscientific experts reflects the growing interest in the direction of GSWA and the State.

Presentations will be available to view on YouTube. Follow GSWA on LinkedIn and Facebook to find out when these will be released.
