  • ADDITIONAL FUNDING AWARDED TO MERIWA

In late 2009 the State Government announced the Exploration Incentive Scheme (EIS), an initiative to encourage exploration in Western Australia for the long-term sustainability of the State's resources sector. The EIS will help reinforce the image of Western Australia as an attractive destination for mineral and energy exploration and investment.

The Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Hon. Norman Moore, advised that MERIWA would receive increased funding of $1.4 million over 4 years as part of program 5 of the EIS, "Promoting Strategic Research with Industry", to support the minerals and petroleum-related research the organisation funds throughout the State in association with industry.

The additional funds were first made available on 1 July 2009. The first exploration project to be supported by the EIS money is titled "North East Yilgarn Biogeochemistry Project" which was approved by the MERIWA Board at its November meeting. The project will evaluate samples taken from plants (Acacia aneura) throughout the N E Yilgarn craton with the aim of detecting the presence of certain minerals, which release ions into the groundwater taken up by the plants.

In the past, projects related to exploration have usually accounted for a significant proportion of MERIWA sponsored and facilitated projects. Preliminary advice from researchers has indicated that they will be submitting a number of new projects for approval which will fall into the exploration category and be able to take advantage of the boost in MERIWA funding.

The additional EIS funding for MERIWA will enable it to make a greater contribution to the long-term sustainability of the State's resources sector.

  • Six MERIWA Scholarship recipients for 2011 were awarded certificates by Minister Norman Moore at a ceremony on 15th June 2011. The recipients or their representatives are pictured here with the Minister and Prof Odwyn Jones of MERIWA Scholarship Committee.
