  • Nominations now open for the 2020 Resources Sector Awards for Excellence

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety’s Resources Sector Awards for Excellence are now open for nominations.

Focusing on environmental and sustainable benefits to communities, the awards acknowledge innovation, outstanding performance and leadership to ensure that the State’s resources are developed in a responsible manner.

Since 1992, the prestigious Golden Gecko Award for Environmental Excellence, has recognised more than 60 projects for demonstrating innovation and outstanding performance, which improved the environmental outcomes for Western Australia.

The Community Partnership Resources Sector Award recognises those who are building sustainable partnerships with communities that extend beyond the life of a project. This year, for the first time, more than one Community Partnership Award may be given to recognise smaller resource operations with shorter lifespans.

Nominations for this year’s awards close 5pm Wednesday April 8, the winners will be announced at an Awards Ceremony in August.

Comments attributed to Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston:

“To ensure our $145 billion resources industry is sustainable, the environmental and social needs of Western Australia must be taken into account, no matter the size of the project.

“A key aspiration of the McGowan Government is to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

“The Awards for Excellence play an important role in sharing project knowledge and encouraging others to continually improve.

“These awards are an important part of recognising and advancing the sector’s innovation and technological capabilities to ensure Western Australia remains globally competitive and a leader in the resources sector.”
