Shaft sinking applications must be submitted online using the Approvals sub-system in the Safety Regulation System (SRS)

Who is responsible for the notification?

The registered manager is required to notify, and receive approval from, senior inspector of mines before:

  • sinking any new shaft
  • extending (deepening/stripping) any existing shaft

Refer to rr. 12.3, 12.4 and 12.5 of the Mines Safety and Inspection Regulations 1995.

The requirements for shaft sinking are mainly given in Parts 11 and 12 of the Mines Safety and Inspection Regulations 1995 and relevant Australian Standards.

Required information

Depending on the nature of the mining operation, only the relevant part(s) of the application need to be completed. However, the items must be addressed in sufficient detail for the application to be properly assessed.

Additional information may be requested after the application is lodged.

Lodging the application

Shaft sinking applications must be submitted online using the Approvals sub-system in the Safety Regulation System (SRS). Include all supporting documents.

The registered manager is required to notify, and receive approval from, the senior inspector of mines via SRS.

An SRS Company Administrator (CA) or Company Representative (CR) can enter information into SRS. The CA can assign the role of CR to any person(s) you nominate to liaise with the Department regarding the submission.
