DMP calls for comments on excess tonnage

Draft of revised guideline can be viewed online
Date: Thursday, 18 May 2017

The Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) is seeking comments on a draft guideline about excess tonnage for exploration.

The draft follows an internal review to evaluate the excess tonnage provisions within the Mining Act 1978, the Mining Regulations 1981, and the relationship of excess tonnage to the Programme of Work process.

“The intent of the provisions continues to be to ensure that excess tonnage can only be requested for genuine exploration or prospecting, rather than for mining,” DMP Mineral Titles Executive Director Dr Ivor Roberts said.

“This draft guideline is intended to reinforce the need for applicants to show that excess tonnage is for prospecting or exploration only and does not interfere with the rights of others with an interest in the land.”

The draft also clarifies the assessment process and requirements for applications.

Please go to the Consultation page to download and read the draft and submit your comments by 2 June 2017.

Once all submissions are considered, the Department will decide on the final content of the guideline and advise stakeholders.
