Training and workshop for prospectors in Kalgoorlie

Promoting benefits of online systems
Date: Tuesday, 02 December 2014

Kalgoorlie prospectors will get training in the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) Mineral Titles Online and Tengraph systems at a training session and workshop next week.

Kalgoorlie prospectors will get training in the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) Mineral Titles Online and Tengraph systems at a training session and workshop next week.

The department’s Mineral Titles Division will be holding a free training session and workshop for prospectors in Kalgoorlie on Tuesday 9 December at its Kalgoorlie office, corner of Hunter and Broadwood Streets, West Kalgoorlie from 9am-3.30pm.

The morning sessions will include online training followed by an afternoon workshop to discuss issues relevant to the division and prospectors. Morning tea and a light lunch will be provided.

“These systems provide current information of land availability and details on the mineral titles in Western Australia,” Mineral Titles Executive Director Dr Ivor Roberts said.

The commitment was made by Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion following the recent annual ‘Meet the Prospectors Barbeque’ held in Kalgoorlie.

“At the event many of the prospectors were keen to know more about the online systems for applications, and other online applications now available to them,” Mr Marmion said.

The Minister also reminded prospectors of the importance of carrying personal locator beacons in remote areas, as the Amalgamated Prospectors and Leaseholders Association (APLA) marks more than a century of service to the Western Australian mining industry.

He also praised the association’s contribution to WA and its support of safety programs.

“Without prospecting we cannot find the mines of tomorrow but prospector safety must always be the top priority,” Mr Marmion said.

“More than 20 prospectors have been reported missing in WA since 2011, and two major searches took place earlier this year.

“The relatively low cost of a locator beacon is a small price to pay for something that could ultimately save your life and I urge you all to consider such a purchase.”

The safety message is also highlighted in the ‘Seven Golden Rules for Prospecting’ brochure available from Community Resource Centres throughout the Goldfields, or online from www.dmp.wa.gov/prospectingwa

The Minister also explained initiatives the State Government had undertaken in the past year to reduce red tape in the resources sector, particularly in the Goldfields.

“To assist prospectors and the resources industry we have been streamlining processes, with the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) working with APLA on online approvals,” he said.

“The department has supported Kalgoorlie-Boulder for well over a century having established the Mining Registrar offices in both towns in 1894, ensuring a local presence and understanding of local issues.”

APLA formed in Kalgoorlie-Boulder in 1904 with the aim of protecting and furthering the interests of prospectors.
